With the closing ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the revered athletes’ homecoming celebration continues to be underway. Terranea and local residents pay their respect to the tremendous achievements throughout the games by Team USA and the 124 athletes hailing from California.
The 558-member U.S. Olympic Team was comprised of 264 men and 294 women, marking the most women who have ever competed for any nation in Olympic Games history. For only the second time in history, the U.S. Olympic roster featured more female athletes than male.
Overall, Team USA took home 46 gold medals, 37 silver medals and 38 bronze medals, making the U.S. the leading medal winner during the 2016 games. Top medalists from Team USA that have left their mark in history include Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, Simone Biles, Ryan Murphy, Simone Manuel, Madeline Dirado, Allyson Felix, Nathan Adrian, Lilly King, Caeleb Dressel and more.
We welcome back nearly 40 local Los Angeles-area participants including Kerri Walsh Jennings, Lucy Davis, Gabby Douglas, Whitney Engen, Christen Press, Merrill Moses, and many more. USC was also represented by 44 past, present and future students at the Games, more than any school in the nation.
This monumental effort builds excitement for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games that will likely be held in Los Angeles. We look forward to going for the gold and supporting our future competitors in the next Olympic Games!
